3D scanning and robotic manipulation of wiring harnesses for automotive components

Partner:

University of Bologna – Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering “Guglielmo Marconi” (DEI)

Challenge:

The department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering (DEI) was looking for a 3D vision system that would be able to detect and enable the manipulation of very thin objects such as wiring harnesses for automotive components. The challenge was that the most common 3D sensors failed in the detection of such thin objects. DEI required a 3D sensor that would provide high resolution and submillimeter accuracy to enable the robot to manipulate these types of objects with exceptional precision.

Solution:

PhoXi 3D Scanner M

Based on the above requirements, DEI decided to use the PhoXi 3D Scanner from Photoneo.

The scanner provides a resolution of 3,2 million 3D points in every scan and a calibration accuracy of 35 – 500 μm across the different models ranging from XS to XL.

For this application, DEI chose the model M, which provides an accuracy of 100 μm and the scanning range of 458 – 1118 mm. These parameters make the model M the optimal choice for the given workspace size in relation to the scanner dimensions, which are 77 x 68 x 416 mm.

The PhoXi 3D Scanner recognizes the harness placed on a surface and allows precise robot navigation and manipulation with the object.

Discussion:

DEI decided to use the PhoXi 3D Scanner from Photoneo in their application thanks to its ability to provide high-resolution and high-accuracy 3D point clouds of even very thin objects.

Using the PhoXi 3D Scanner helped reduce the grasping error and increase the overall precision of the application.
