3D scanning of objects moving on an overhead conveyor

December 15, 2021

Challenge:

This case study describes the benefits of using the Photoneo 3D camera MotionCam-3D for automated handling of objects moving on an overhead conveyor. In standard applications, the overhead conveyor needs to stop so that the objects hanging on it, such as heavy metal wheels, for instance, can be picked by a human operator using a lifting manipulator arm and placed in another location. Performing this task manually delivers a low cycle time.

Solution:

MotionCam-3D

MotionCam-3D is able to scan objects while they are moving along an overhead conveyor, swinging, or slightly rotating. This is enabled by a specially designed gripper and movement compensations provided by 3D data from the vision system.

The ability to scan objects that are continuously moving on an overhead conveyor increases productivity, efficiency, and throughput in countless applications, for instance in pick and place applications or in automated painting, where the robot can keep a constant distance from the objects.

Discussion:

MotionCam-3D is the only area-scan 3D camera that can capture fast-moving objects in high resolution and accuracy. It is thus the right choice for applications that require the handling of objects moving on conveyors, providing a continuous stream of high-quality 3D data even during movement, swinging, or vibration.

MotionCam-3D decreases cycle times and allows an application to run without interruption or the need for human operators.
