Photoneo and Jacobi Robotics tackle Mixed case palletizing automation for Delta Technology

The Eyes of Automation: Enabling Real-Time Mixed-Case Palletizing

How Photoneo’s MotionCam-3D provided the critical visual intelligence for a breakthrough deployment with Jacobi Robotics and Delta Technology.

At a Glance

  • Challenge: Automating a chaotic, injury-prone manual palletizing line handling random, unsequenced parcels.
  • The Missing Link: High-fidelity, real-time 3D perception to “see” incoming freight and verify outgoing stability.
  • Vision Technology: Photoneo MotionCam-3D.
  • The Partnership: Photoneo (Vision) + Jacobi Robotics (Software/Brain) + Delta Technology (Integration) + FANUC (Motion).

Result: A live production cell with 100% pallet stability and detection of damaged goods before they enter the stack.

The Challenge: You Can’t Stack What You Can’t See

For a major defense manufacturer, the shipping dock was a bottleneck of risk. Operators were manually building pallets from a conveyor of completely random cases, varying weights (up to 27.2 kg/60 lbs), sizes, and conditions.

While Delta Technology provided the integration expertise and Jacobi Robotics offered the “brain” to plan the pallet, the system faced a fundamental physics problem: blind robots cannot handle chaos.

In a “brownfield” environment with no pre-sorting or sequencing, the robot doesn’t know what is coming next. Standard automation relies on fixed recipes.

Here, the recipe changes every second. To make this work, the system needed eyes that could capture the reality of the conveyor belt in milliseconds.

The Solution: MotionCam-3D as the Source of Truth

To solve this, the cell was equipped with Photoneo’s MotionCam-3D.

Unlike traditional static scanners that require the conveyor to stop for a snapshot, MotionCam-3D captures high-resolution 3D point clouds of objects in motion. This allowed the system to feed precise, real-time data into Jacobi’s OmniPalletizer software without slowing down throughput.

The vision system performs two distinct, mission-critical roles in this workflow:

1. The Infeed Scanner: Perfect Perception in Motion

As cases flow down the conveyor, the MotionCam-3D acts as the gatekeeper.

  • Real-Time Dimensioning: A 3D scanner instantly captures the exact dimensions (L x W x H) and orientation of every box. This data is fed to Jacobi’s path planner, allowing the software to solve the “Tetris” puzzle of where the box fits best on the pallet.
  • Quality Control (Damage Detection): This is where vision goes beyond simple measuring. The high-fidelity 3D data detects crushed corners, open flaps, or structural damage before the robot picks the box. Damaged boxes are flagged and rejected, preventing unstable stacks and ensuring load integrity for freight carriers.

2. The Verification Scanner: Closing the Loop

Placement accuracy is everything in mixed-case palletizing. Once the robot places a case, a secondary visual check confirms the reality matches the plan.

  • Placement Verification: The system verifies that the box was placed in the correct coordinates and orientation.
  • Stack Stability Check: By scanning the building layers, the system confirms the pallet remains flat and stable, ensuring 100% stability even as the stack grows higher.

Why the Partnership Works

This deployment proves that successful brownfield automation is an ecosystem play.

Even the most advanced AI planner cannot build a stable pallet if its input data is wrong. Photoneo ensures that Jacobi’s ‘brain’ receives a perfect picture of reality, every single cycle.

  • Photoneo: Provides the “Eyes” (High-quality 3D data & Quality Control).
  • Jacobi Robotics: Provides the “Brain” (Real-time path planning & physics-aware logic).
  • FANUC: Provides the “Muscle” (Reliable industrial robotics).
  • Delta Technology: Delivers the “Body” (Seamless integration into the warehouse floor).

The Outcome: Validated, Safe, and Scalable

By giving the robot the ability to see, measure, and verify, the manufacturer achieved results that traditional blind automation could never match:

  • 100% Stability: Vision-verified stacking ensures no product loss during transit.
  • Zero Downtime for “Surprises”: Damaged boxes are seen and stopped by MotionCam-3D before they cause a fault.
  • High Cube Utilization: Precise dimensioning allows Jacobi to pack pallets up to 90% density, outperforming human stacking.
  • Sim-to-Real Accuracy: The 3D data was so accurate that the simulation matched real-world cycle times with 0% error.

This project moves mixed-case palletizing from a “science project” to a robust, industrial reality, powered by the partnership of superior vision and intelligent software.
